Why is paving around a pool different from a normal terrace?
Pool paving is different because the pool sets the rules. The surround must meet the coping at the right level, fall away from the water, use a material suitable for wet bare feet and be built without damaging the pool or its pipework. Each of those adds care and time that a plain terrace does not need.
The Spanish Building Code asks for slip resistance class 3 on pool surrounds within its scope, at least 1.20 m wide and built to avoid puddling; whether a particular villa falls within that scope is something your architect or the town hall can confirm. Those requirements narrow the choice of materials and make the falls more critical, which is the starting point for any honest budget conversation. More detail is in our guide to pool surround materials.
How much of the work is removing the old surround?
On many older villas, removal is a large part of the job. Old tiles bonded to concrete, loose crazy paving or a cracked slab all have to come out, and it has to happen right next to the pool without chipping the coping or dropping debris into the water.
- The pool is covered and protected, and debris is kept well away from the water.
- Old surfaces bonded to concrete take more breaking than pavers on sand.
- Rubble must be carried out, often through the garden, and taken to an authorised destination.
- Under Law 7/2022, rubble from minor domestic works counts as household waste under municipal responsibility.
If the existing surround is sound but tired, removal may be unnecessary. Renewing the surface without replacing it is the work of our sister site for concrete painting and related restoration services.
Why does the base near the pool need extra attention?
The ground around a pool shell was usually dug out and backfilled during construction, and backfill that was not compacted properly keeps settling. That is the most common reason pool surrounds sink beside the coping, and correcting it means more excavation and more compaction than on undisturbed ground.
Pipework for filtration, lighting cables and the route to the pump room also run under the surround. They must be located and protected before any machine is used. On some jobs, part of the work is done by hand for exactly that reason. Our page on pool surround paving describes how we approach the base around a pool.
How does the coping affect the budget?
The coping, the edge pieces on top of the pool wall, is a separate element from the surround but strongly linked to it. If the existing coping is sound and level, the new paving simply meets it. If it is loose, damaged or at the wrong height, it has to be dealt with first, and that decision changes the whole job.
We always agree in advance who supplies and fixes coping pieces, because the pool structure is a different trade from paving. Leaving that question open is one of the classic causes of surprises halfway through a pool project.
Do slip-rated materials cost more?
Choosing a material with the right slip class does not always mean a more expensive product, but it narrows the choice. Polished and honed finishes are excluded, and some ranges offer the textured outdoor version at a different price from the smooth one.
| Material | Budget considerations around a pool |
|---|---|
| Concrete slabs or pavers | Wide choice of textured finishes; laid on a flexible bed |
| Natural stone | Finish and declared slip class vary; more cutting around curves |
| Crazy paving | Slow to fit; usually bonded to a concrete base |
| Outdoor porcelain | Needs a rigid base and precise bonding; anti-slip version only |
If you are torn between stone and concrete, our comparison of natural stone and concrete around the pool goes into the differences in more depth.
Why do curves, skimmers and steps add time?
Every curve, skimmer lid, drain, ladder fixing and step into the pool needs cuts. A rectangular pool with a straight surround is quick to pave; a kidney-shaped pool with roman steps, a shower and a planter can require many more cuts for the same area.
Large-format slabs look calm but waste more material on tight curves. Smaller formats adapt better. Discussing the layout before buying material saves both cutting time and waste, and it avoids thin slivers next to the coping.
How do drainage and falls enter the budget?
Every pool surround needs falls away from the water, but some also need a channel along a wall or where the surround meets the terrace, connected to existing drainage. Where the surround is enclosed by walls or higher garden, the drainage work grows.
The same thinking applies to the adjoining terrace, so it often makes sense to plan both together. See paved terraces for the terrace side and our post on why terraces hold water for the most common drainage problems.
How can you keep a pool paving budget under control?
The most effective way to keep the budget under control is to settle the open questions before work starts: the coping, the material, the falls and where water will go. Changes made once the old surround is out are the ones that cost most, because the team, the machines and the materials are already committed.
- Decide whether the coping stays, and who handles it if it does not.
- Choose the material with its declared slip class before the quote is finalised.
- Pick a format that suits the shape of the pool, to limit cuts and waste.
- Clear furniture, sunbeds and planters from the area beforehand.
- Plan the surround and the adjoining terrace together if both need work.
Scheduling also matters for owners who let the villa. Booking the work outside the busiest letting months avoids pressure to rush and leaves time to inspect the result before guests arrive.
Where can you see figures?
All figures for the network are published on our sister site precioadoquinado.eu, run by the same autónomo. Start with block paving cost per m², read what pushes the price up and try the paving calculator for an indicative range.
For your own pool, send us a photo and the approximate m² – free, no-obligation quote. Include a wide shot of the pool and surround, close-ups of the coping and any sunken areas, and a photo of the access route from the street.
Frequently asked questions
Why does paving around a pool cost more than a plain terrace?
Because the work has more constraints: protecting the pool during removal, compacting backfill near the shell, matching the coping level, using a slip-rated material, cutting around curves and fittings, and sending water away from the pool. Each adds time compared with an open terrace.
Does the coping have to be replaced when I repave?
Not necessarily. If the coping is sound, level and fixed, the new surround simply meets it. If it is loose or damaged, it should be dealt with first. We agree beforehand who supplies and fixes the coping, since the pool structure is a separate trade.
Can I keep my old surround and just renew the surface?
If it is sound, flat and drains properly, renewal without replacement may be possible, through cleaning, crack repair and a tinted coating. Our sister site for restoration explains when that works. If it has sunk or cracked badly, it needs rebuilding.
Is a slip-resistant material much more expensive?
Not always. The main effect is narrowing the choice, because polished and honed finishes are excluded. Textured outdoor versions of the same range can be priced differently. Ask suppliers for the declared slip class of each option you are considering.
Why does a curved pool take longer to pave?
Curves, skimmers, drains, ladder fixings and roman steps all need cuts. A kidney-shaped pool can require many more cuts than a rectangular one of the same size, particularly with large-format slabs, which also produce more waste on tight curves.
Does the pool have to be emptied for the work?
It depends on the job. In many cases the pool is covered and protected rather than emptied. If the coping is being replaced or the work affects the pool wall, the pool specialist will advise. We plan the protection before work starts.
What happens to the rubble from the old surround?
It is removed and taken to an authorised destination. Under Law 7/2022, rubble from minor domestic works is treated as household waste under municipal responsibility. The written quote says who removes the rubble and how.
Can I combine the pool surround and terrace in one job?
Yes, and it often makes sense, because levels and falls are shared and the site is set up only once. Coordinating both also avoids an awkward joint between new and old paving. We quote them as separate items so you can decide.
Where are your prices for pool paving?
All network prices are on our sister site precioadoquinado.eu, run by the same autónomo. It includes cost per square metre, the factors that raise the price and a calculator. This site explains the work and the factors only.
What photos do you need for a pool paving quote?
A wide shot of the pool and surround, close-ups of the coping, any sunken or cracked areas and drains, and a photo of the route from the street. Add the approximate square metres and the material you have in mind.
