Replace, repair or renovate: outdoor paving in Nerja

In shortIn Nerja and Maro, at the eastern end of the Málaga coastline, we lay new terraces, patios, pool surrounds, garden paths and outdoor steps. Many enquiries here concern an existing surface that looks tired, so we first help you decide between three routes: a full replacement by us, a base repair by our sister site for sunken paving, or a restoration coating without lifting anything.

Where do we work in Nerja?

Across the municipality, including the town of Nerja and Maro. Nerja belongs to the Axarquía comarca and is the last of the coastal municipalities along the Senda Litoral on the eastern side of the province. Our base is in Marbella, so we organise a first assessment from photographs and then plan the site visit around the work.

Should you replace, repair or renovate?

The answer depends on what is wrong with the surface, not on how old it is. A terrace that is firm and level but faded can be renovated; one that has sunk in places needs its base corrected; one that is broken, slippery or drains badly is usually worth replacing.

If you are unsure, send photos of the worst area and a wide view. We will tell you which route we think fits, even when it is not ours. The restoration route is described on patio and terrace restoration, and base repairs on re-levelling pavers.

What should your photos show so we can tell the routes apart?

Telling a worn surface from a failing one is easier than many owners expect, provided the pictures show the right things. A handful of well-chosen photos usually lets us say which of the three routes is worth pursuing before anyone travels to Nerja.

  • A wide view of the whole terrace or pool area taken from standing height.
  • A low-angle shot along the surface, which reveals dips and humps.
  • Close-ups of cracks, open joints or loose pieces, with a coin or key for scale.
  • The area after rain or hosing, if you can, to show where water stays.
  • The junction with walls, steps and the pool coping.

With those, we reply in English with our view and the next step. If the answer is renovation or a base repair, we pass your enquiry to the sister site concerned, with your permission, so you do not have to explain everything a second time.

What do we build new in Nerja?

When replacement is the right call, the jobs we carry out here include:

  • a paved terrace with a clear fall away from the house;
  • a pool surround in a class 3 slip-resistant material;
  • outdoor steps linking terraces on a sloping plot;
  • garden paths with a firm edge so planting does not creep onto them.

Under the Spanish Building Code, pool surrounds within its scope need slip-resistance class 3 and a minimum width of 1.20 m built to avoid puddling; whether a private house is within scope is something an architect or the town hall can confirm. Our pool surround materials guide compares the options.

If your house is on a plot with several levels, steps in the same red, grey or stone tone as the terraces keep the garden visually connected, and each landing is a chance to take rainwater off the route before it reaches the next flight.

Practical matters and next steps

The town hall procedure for outdoor paving in Nerja follows its current ordinance, so it is worth confirming with the council first. We remove the old surface as household rubble through the municipal channel. Frequently asked questions

Do you work in Maro as well as Nerja town?

Yes. Maro is part of the municipality of Nerja and we cover it in the same way. Let us know how vehicles reach the house so we can plan deliveries and the removal of the old surface.

How do I know if my terrace can be renovated instead of replaced?

Walk on it and look closely. If nothing rocks, there are no dips and water drains away, renovation may be enough. If pavers move or water stands in hollows, the base needs attention first.

Is the same company behind the restoration and repair sites?

Yes. All six websites are run by the same self-employed contractor based in Marbella. Each site covers one type of job, so the advice you receive matches the problem you actually have.

Can you make outdoor steps safer?

Yes, by rebuilding them with regular treads and risers, firm nosings and a surface with grip. We clad steps in pavers or natural stone to match the terraces they connect.

What slip class should my pool surround have?

Class 3, the highest class in the Building Code, which it requires on pool surrounds within its scope. For a private house the formal scope is a question for an architect or the town hall, but we recommend it regardless.

Is Nerja too far from Marbella?

No. We serve the whole province. We assess from photographs first and plan the site visit and the work so that travel time is used efficiently.

Do I need permission from the Nerja town hall?

It depends on the job. Andalusia's LISTA law covers many minor works without a project with a responsible declaration, but the Nerja town hall is the one to confirm the procedure that applies to your paving.

Can you lay paving next to an existing wall without damaging it?

Yes. We dig carefully along the base of walls, keep the new surface slightly below any damp-proof level and lay it with a fall away from the wall so water is not pushed against it.

Will you communicate in English?

Yes. Scope, quote and updates are in English, by email or WhatsApp, with photographs at each finished stage so you can follow progress from anywhere.

How can I get an idea of the cost?

The price depends on the route: a new surface, a base repair or a renovation have very different costs. Our sister site explains restoration costs and new paving costs separately.
